data from drop down lists

I am using excel to design a form with lots of drop down lists. Unfortunately the data seems to translate into numbers rather than staying as the text options in my drop down lists.

ie a drop down list that reads
red
blue
green

translates (data-wise) into
1
2
3

I desperately need my data to stay as the text of the options selected. Can anyone help?
