Some locked cells still allow edits

I have a fairly big workbook (about 40 tabs) that refers to 6 other workbooks. There are several formulas that I want to protect in this workbook, and the plan was to lock the cells those formulas are in and protect each of the 40 or so worksheet. I have encountered the following problem:

Some of the cells I have locked are behaving like I would expect: if I try to edit them, I get a message saying the cell is locked and read-only.
Other cells (and I did check that they were indeed locked - I can see that the locked box is checked when I temporarily unprotect the sheet to have access to the format for these cells) don't prevent me from overwriting them at all. I can click on them, type a number, and the formula will be replaced by that number without Excel so much as blinking.

I checked and re-checked that my cells were locked and that my worksheet was protected. I'm stumped.

The formula that I am able to overwrite in spite of locking the cell refers to a named cell in another workbook. I have some formulas that use a sumif statement and that also refer to another (different) workbook, and those are properly locked (won't let me edit).

I'm stumped. Anybody ever had this problem? Anybody know how to fix it? I've already rebooted, and nothing changed.

    Thanks for any help,

    Brigitte

    Hi,

you could reset the Excel defaults, firstly locate and delete any .xlb file, then in windows,

    Start, Run, Excel.exe /unregserver

    Start, Run, Excel.exe /regserver

    to see if that helps.
