Vlookup text?

Hello,

Is there a way I can create a lookup for text values rather than numbers ?

I want to use it as a method of translation, like creating my database of some vocab and placing them in sheet2 A1:A1000 and in B1:B1000 i will place their translations.
in Sheet1 I want to enter a word and look it up in sheet2 to read its translation from B1:B1000

I really neeeeeeeed you help badly on this
