    creating pop-up menu with fixed values

    hello! first post...

    I'd like to have a simple pop-up menu in every cell of a column with a specific list of choices...i'd also like that list to be editable so i can make additions and have that cascade throughout the column. The purpose is simple. Just being able to select a status like "In Progress", "Complete" etc. and after that I'll apply conditional formatting to the row based on the selection. How is this done? Not having much luck with Excel's help feature...

    thx

    Hi bcamp,

    This can be done using Data Validation.

    1. Select your column or range of cells
    2. Click Data -> Validation...
    3. On the Settings tab, select 'List' underneath 'Allow'
    4. Under 'Source', type your values, e.g. InProg,Comp,Reopen,Closed
    5. 'Ignore Blank' and 'In Cell Dropdown' should be checked
    6. On the 'Input Message' tab you can type in a message that will be displayed to the user upon selecting that cell. Sometimes annoying.
    7. On the 'Error Alert' page you can set it to warn/stop the user from entering invalid data.
    8. Click OK and those cells will all have in-cell dropdowns (you'll only see the arrows when you select the cell, though).

    In the future, if you want to modify the choices, simply select one of those cells and click Data -> Validation.. Then change the list source as needed, and this time check the box near the bottom labeled 'Apply these changes to all other cells with the same settings'. Click OK and all of those cells will have the updated list.

    Hope that helps you out.
