    Automatically numbering shaded boxes

Hi I was wondering if there was anyway to automatically enter a number in a shaded box. I have just worked out staff breakdown of annual leave - where the days they've had off are shown as a red box. I would like to either count up the boxes automatically - or enter a red 1 in each box, and then do an autosum of them - so it will show up how many days they have.

    Thanks
    Sarah

    Hi,

The easiest way to do this in Excel would actually be the other way round. i.e. when '1' is put into a column it changes colour (which can be done through Conditional Formatting).

If you want to do it your way I'd suggest either downloading a application like ASAP (http://www.asap-utilities.com/) which includes a few useful worksheet functions based on colour, or you can do it using VBA - a description of which you can find here: http://www.cpearson.com/excel/colors.htm
