Problems with the pointer arrow

This forum has saved me in the past with computer problems, now I have a new one. I can't get a standard "pointer arrow" to come up on excel. Instead it is an X that looks like a plus sign. The arrow, of course is what I need if I want to add anything to the datasheet. This is causing me great concern because I have important financial information on my excel sheets that I can't do anything about. with the plus sign pointer it highlights everything you put it over with you wanting to. If I go to the right side of the screen or down it starts dragging the excel sheet down. It gets to the point where I can't even exit the screen without right clicking excel on the taskbar. I don't know if this is a virus or what, it is beyond frustrating.

On second though, I realize that this "plus" sign is what you want to have. What is happening is that it is almost like it's locked in highlighting mode. What could I have possibly done to make this happen?
