Equal sign not allowing a Date

I would appreciate any help. I tried hard to enter the appropriate title, but the problem is hard to convey concisely.

    Okay, here goes...
Each time I try to enter a date in a cell, the cell automatically generates an "=" which results in a formula. For instance, if I try to input the following: 11/14/07
The cell becomes a formula and looks like this:
    =11/14/07
This results in a date of 1/1/1900

If I go in the cell and delete the "=" it simply reappears.

I have isolated the problem to this particular sheet because if I simply create a copy of the sheet the problem goes away.

Does anyone have any insight into why this might be happening.

Equal sign not allowing a Date

    Excel thinks it's Lotus 1-2-3...

    From the Excel Main Menu:
    <tools><options><transition>
    UNcheck: Transition formula entry
    (and anything else that's checked)
    Click [OK]

    Does that help?
