Open ended Data Validation List

From what I've tried, wild cards cannot be used with a Validation List. Is there a way around this? On a protected worksheet, I'd like to have the dropdown list for people to choose from but they can also type in their own entries if the values in the dropdown don't match. Thoughts?

You can change the Error Alert to Warning or Information, instead of Stop.
