Look in a list and return an answer

I've tried to find the answer in the forum before posting but i cant seem to find it. Is there any function that would allow me to let excel tell me if a cell contains a certain value from a list of possibilities.

A
apple
banana
pear
carrot

possibilities
apple
banana
pear

if A2 is banana or apple or pear then B2 would contain a certain value that i will determine

Try a vlookup to a table if values change a lot or

=LOOKUP(A2,{"apple","banana","pear"},{1,2,3})
