    Data Merge Question

    Hello,
I have a huge file of clients. Some are married some are not. The married client's data is all on the same row, but their names are separated in different columns:

For example, the row with Bob and Mary Smith looks like:
    Client1fname (Bob), client1lastname (Smith), client2fname (Mary), client2lastname (Smith).

I would like to do a personal mail merge letter. How can I merge the first name fields for my married clients so that my greeting will look like this "Dear Bob and Mary", but only "Dear Larry," when the client is single?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

To form the names, you could try this, assuming the names are in A1:D1, with this in E1, you could also put the single persons and columns A and B as well and use this one formula.

    =IF(C1="","Dear "&TRIM(A1&","),"Dear "&TRIM(A1&" and "&C1&","))
