Date Appears As Number

Should be a simple fix...
Cell is formatted as Date.
39455 appears in the cell. If I double-click on the cell, the date, "1/8/2008" appears in the cell and formula bar, but returns to 39455 when I click elsewhere. Any suggestions?

Excel represents dates as numbers. To see it in a date format, select the cell, Format > Cells > Date ...
