    Fields switched to date format

This question is now academic, since I have finally succeeded in restoring from backup, but it is a strange phenomenon

I clicked an Excel file icon on the desktop open three times, thinking it wasn't opening. When I finally closed three versions of Excel and opened the file I found that many of the fields are now in date format. Thus a number is represented by a date after 1/1/1900. It has happened in every one of the workbooks and only where there is data. Formulae show up correctly but if they show negative results they overflow ######### because "negative numbers are too large to display"

Is there a one step correction that will undo this effect?
