    Calculating time between process steps

    This one totally evades me...

I have a report that lists the times for each step in a process. I want to calculate the time it takes each step to happen so I can run stats to say how long things take and how we have been improving, etc.

An example is attached. This one is a simple example but if I can do it for 4 steps I can do it for more. In the example, a document gets upload, two approvers and then gets published.

I would want to look at time from upload to publish as well as time from upload to approval, etc. This sheet has three docs but my real sheet has hundreds so manually doing it is not feasible.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Your data layout does not lend itself to this type of analysis.

It would be better if all the stages for a product were laid out across the page so then it would be easy to work out time differences col-col.

That makes sense. If I try to do that I encouter the issue that each doc goes through a different number of steps. We more correctly: most go through the same number but there are about 10% that go through several more steps, sometimes twice too.

Thanks for your help. I will keep working on this and post a solution if I figure it out...

Anyone know if the data can be converted easily? If I could get it into the column form that Ed described, I think that would solve my problem.
