Numbers formatted as text

Hi,

I have large worksheet in which some of the numbers seem to be text when an ISTEXT() test is applied to them. However, when I look at the cell format in Format-Cells-Number the data appears to be formatted as a "number". Also, I can perform calculations on this "text" so, again, it appears that the data are numbers not text.

How can I change the "text" to actual numbers as colleagues trying to use the data find the "text" problematic.

If, as you say, the cells are formatted to number (or general), AND there are no blank spaces in front of or behind the numbers, then there's a simple trick to get Excel to relook at all the values and see them as numbers.

In an empty cell, place a 1. Then copy that cell and highlight the range of numbers you are interested in. Edit>Paste Special>Multiply. This multiplies all those values by 1 and in performing the calculation, Excel will then realize they are all numbers.

Put a 0 in another cell and copy it. Highlight the text values, paste special, select Add under Operation.
