Grading a multiple choice test in Excel

I have a spreadsheet with two colums. The first column is the "answer key" which contains all the correct answers. So cell A1 is the correct answer to question 1, A2 is the answer to question 2, and so on.

The 2nd column contains the student's answers. So B1 is his answer to question 1, B2 his answer to question 2, etc.

    All of the answers are either A, B, C, D, or E.

What forumla should I use to count how many questions the student got right?

    Thanks.

    Try:

    =SUMPRODUCT(--(B1:B100=A1:A100))

this will count how many times the item in column B matches the corresponding item in column A.
Where there is a will there are many ways.
