    Talking Losing Worksheet Protection

I have a workbook with a number of worksheets. Some of these worksheets have cells that contain formulas and are sheet protected (hidden and locked).
After using the workbook for a while, I sometimes find these cells have become no longer protected i.e. the formulas are now visible and I can write right over the formulas. Other features such as fill and font colors work as if the cells were unprotected.
If I click on tools and point to protection, the drop down menu shows 'Unprotect Sheet' as one of the choices seemingly signifying that Excel thinks the sheet is still protected.
While in this condition, I protected the entire workbook, but the formulas remained visible and I could still write into the cells.
If I unprotect the worksheet then protect it again, it works the way it is suppose to work.
I am using Excel 2000 but I've seen the same problem in Excel 2003. Does anyone know what causes this and if there is a way to ensure continued cell protection?

Have you run any code to unprotect a sheet?
