    External referncing - basic question

Apologies - couldn't find exact help by searching!

For example I am using the SUM function in one workbook and want to copy the results to another workbook. I have learnt from here to use ='workbook1' in the workbook 2 to start but then when I go to click onto workbook 1 cell required to be copied workbook 2 goes through its "formula error" dialogue as, naturally there is an unfinished formula.

How do you physically enter the formula in workbook 2 without having to know the correct cell reference in workbook 1?

    Thanks in advance!
