    pivot table total rows

    Hi-

Does anyone know how to total (sum) rows in a pivot table? Table options-grand totals for rows does not work.

Additionally, when I put all the expressions in (Expr1, Expr2 etc.), the first was sum of Expr1, the second count of Expr2 (which I changed to sum of Expr2). Does anyone know why I had to do this?

    I have attached a spreadsheet (Excel 2000).

    Thanks,

    Tim

    Hi Tom,

I think you are misunderstanding the use of the PT. You are actually seeing a total of the rows in the PT. That's why you get the text 'Sum of Expr1' etc. You don't see a Grand Total because you have not specified another field in the Rows area, hence Expr1 etc is not subdivided. If you were to drag say the 'Date' field into the table rows area, then you would see totals by date and a grand total for all the rows.

The reason you get a count for Expr2 is because the cells M4:M6 contain non numeric values. Because the PT detects a mixture of numeric and non numeric values in M2:M6 and can't sum non numeric values it offers the next best information which is the count of the rows, i.e. 5. If you were to put zero in those cells you'll find you do get Expr2 to Sum rather than count.

    pivot table

    Hi Richard,

Sorry, made a mistake in my explanation. Was actually looking for the total of columns, not rows...

    pivot table column totals

    Hi Manny,

There doesn't seem to be an option for column subtotals in the pivot table toolbar (I am on Excel 2000).

    Thanks,

    Tim
