    Rank changes after sort

    Hello,
Column L contains the numbers shown below, column M contains the formula,
=RANK(L$4,L$4:L$18),"") & it works perfectly as long as I do not sort. but if I sort by any column, column M changes to what's below. Why? Is this so obvious I cannot see it?

Column L Column M Column M after sorting
    51.95 8 5
    51.65 9 7
    54.65 2 8
    52.36 6 6
    54.67 1 2
    53.74 4 3
    49.77 10 9
    54.49 3 1
    52.28 7 4
    53.68 5 10

    Thanks,
    Fujimi-cho

    Remove one $. =RANK(L4,L$4:L$18),"")
