Find Duplications

Is it possible to have Excel search a column for duplicate content? Say I've got a long list of names and I want to see if a certian name is listed twice.

You can try something like:

=Countif($A$1:$A1.$A1) in the next column... assuming your list starts at A1....

copy it down.

The resulting numbers tell you how many times the item appears in the list.

Thanks for the tip, however, after playing around with it, I found that the formula should be =COUNTIF(A1:A9999,A1) rather than the =Countif($A$1:$A1.$A1) that you suggested. You then have to copy the formula down the right column.

Sorry, that was pretty careless of me... you are correct... but you should still put the $ in front of the cell references in order to "freeze" the ranges when you copy down the formula.
