Importing and placing data according to part #

We have an existing spreadsheet from a supplier with product reference number, product group, description, size, material, price. We have now just received his new spreadsheet which has mostly the same products (some deleted, some new) with reference number and (shorter) description and price.

How can import the old description, size and material information from the old spreadsheet and place it against the same product in the new spreadsheet? As there are over 4,000 products, manual is not possible. What I need is something that says "go to old spread sheet, pick up the infromation from columns D to G according to the reference number in column A, and then place it in the new spreadsheet columns D to G wherever the reference number matches"?

    Hi,

This sounds like a job for VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH. If you Google either you'll get a whole bunch of tutorials.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I'm going to do it via Access and effectively 'join' two tables where the reference numbers match and then export a report with the updated information - that way we can also export a 'non-matching' report to see where reference numbers have either changed or been introduced.
