My issue: If ON I need to times (x) the miles (column C) by .0285 to equal D
If NY I need to times (x) the miles (column C) by .0125 to equal D

Set up a table with your factors in it; Initials in Col A, factors in Col B. Let's say this is in A40:B50
In D;

Hi there,
Thanks for the help! but I have decided to change around the format it will be easier to reference at a later point. I have to report state mileage at the end of every month and calculate a percentage of tax based on each state. So here we go . . .
A (State) B (Miles per State) C (answer) - Sheet 1
NY 555
AZ 222
So on a seperate sheet in my workbook I have the designated state tax rate percentages for each.
Sheet 2
A (state) B (Rate Tax)
NY 0.0255
AZ 0.1225
I have no idea how to reference and calculate each time I enter the state and mileage that it will automatically calculate the answer - I have basic 101 excel skills. . . thank you, thank you. . . I cannot ignore solving my dilemma any longer
Here is an example workbook using the VLOOKUP as described to bring in the tax rate. I used the Defined Name "TaxRate" to reference the table.
To create a defined name, highlight the area you want to name (Sheet2 A2:B60) and in the whte box where it says "A2" (left side of your toolbar) type in TaxRate and push enter.
Hope this helps.
