Automatically count how many boxes are filled in

Am trying to create a spreadsheet to help with buying / selling things (neopets - sad but true!) and was wondering if there was a calculation I could enter to tell me how many items I've bought in a day. One column contains all items bought - so I could just count them, but would be easier to set a calculation that would do it automatically!

Or, if all the purchase quantities are in the A column starting at A2, then:

Change A18 to whatever row you want to stop at.
