Minimized Window halfway off screen - can't move back down

    Hi,

This is weird but somehow I dragged a minimized window in Excel so that the top bar (where you click to drag) is hidden off the screen and now I can't drag it back down.

I can maximize the window through a right mouse click on the task bar.

Alt Space does not enable the "move" function.

I have restarted excel, closed it through the "X" and through the task bar. I have rebooted. I have renamed my file. Unfortunately this is a file I use all the time so really hope that I don't have to start over...

    Any thoughts? Thank you!

How about "Window - Arrange - Cascade" within Excel. That should arrange all windows at the same size and fan them out.

If your taskbar is at the bottom of your screen, you can drag it to the top, right click it and de-select the auto hide option under properties to force the excel window down.

Another option that seems simple enough - change your screen resolution to something very large (e.g. 1900x1440, or the max your video card will allow). You should be able to find the "hidden" window and drag it toward the center, then change your resolution back to normal.

If you're already at the maximum resolution for your monitor, one of the other suggestions hopefully worked!

That worked for me. I just clicked on properties of my task bar and unchecked the auto hide. You are right, it forced the excel window over so that I could click on it to move it. What a pain in the, !!!! Anyway, thanks.

For others that may encounter this issue, check the worksheet protection to ensure that the view isn't locked. That ended up being my problem.

you can also use CTRL + F8. A 4-arrowed cursor should pop up. Then, you can hit the keyboard arrow key that you need. This should allow you to resize your window-in-window.

Calcifer, in what envrionment does that work? It does nothing for me in Win 7 with Excel 2003 to 2013. Ctrl-F8 just does not seem to do anything.

teylyn, I'm running Microsoft Excel Version: 14.0.6129.5000 (32-bit) on Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.

Here is the official MS webpage about the shortcut(s):
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...001111659.aspx

"CTRL+F8 performs the Size command (on the Control menu for the workbook window) when a workbook is not maximized."

Re: Minimized Window halfway off screen - can't move back down

Ah, so you run Excel on Office? You may mean that you run Excel as part of Office (version/flavour something). It still runs on an operating system like Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 or 8. These may be valid hooks for behavioural differences.

Also, the link you posted describes shortcuts for Excel 2003. Although most of these still work in later versions, you cannot take that for granted. If you use Excel/Office 2010, you should refer to the shortcut reference for that version.

    As to Ctrl+F8:

For the record: Ctrl-F8 only affects the current workbook if the workbook is not maximized within the current Excel application. In that case, the keyboard shortcut will initiate the manual resizing behaviour, which lets the arrow keys control the size of the non-maximized workbook window within the Excel application window.

But the problem of the OP was that the workbook window was off-screen, so no shortcut to resize will suffice unless you can get to the workbook window in the first place. In any case, the question was answered above.
