    Good afternoon martindwilson

Just go right ahead and install it.

I have XL2000, Office 2003 and Office 2007 co-existing quite happily on the same XP installation. Office 2007 found the earlier version and asked if I wanted to keep it (I did) and if I wanted Office 2007 to be the default viewer for any office files (I didn't).

That was about six months ago and no problem since... (touching wood)

well that didnt go to well! it just installed, bang!. now excell2007 is my default for opening excel files, blast.
i still have excel97 and can open it with a shortcut, but i canot change default even changing to old excel.exe in filetypes still opens with 2007.

Can't say for 97, Martin, but after installing Office 2007, I needed to do Detect and Repair on 2003 to restore the default file association.

I sometimes need to do it again following installation of Office 2007 updates.

    Hi martindwilson

Sorry if I gave you duff information, matey. Just relating my own personal experiences - which seems fairly at odds with yours and shg's experiences.

Are you using XP? If so you could always do a system restore to set your system as it was before Office 2007, before you think about how you want to proceed.

    Actually, see http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=162059

Edit: Never mind, that was for preventing files from opening in Explorer.

    it works NOT
now i get all sorts of messages when i try to open a document directly 2007 eventually opens it but 97 wont. anydoc can be opened from the file menu tho.

Yeah, sorry, I should have told you that didn't work for me either. That was what prompted the D&R.

system restore eh, i just love xp pro. now everything is back. i think next time i'll try a custom install of 2007. one thing i did notice is it was slow. now ive got an amd 64 duel core 6000+ at 3000mhz with 2 gig ddr2-800 ram so its no slouch but excel2007 ran like an old worn out nag as opposed to the nigh on instant -97 version
thanx for the assist chaps, i'll do some googleing to se if there's a way.(lucky i didnt pay the 500 quid for the software or i'd be fuming, but got it on a microsoft home use deal for cost of disk and postage as my company has some deal with MS).
