Tracks Changes in workbook not shared?

    Hi,

New too excel got a quick question, can you track changes and not set the workbook to shared ? I have a requirement in a new project to log history of changes made but only allow one user to edit the workbook at a time.

From playing about with controls it would appear I can only track changes if the workbook is shared thus allowing more than one user to edit the workbook at a time. Is this correct ? Is there a way I can get around this?

    Thanks,

    I think so.

You could potentially put a macro in the workbook open event which changes the read/write access to readonly if it's already open. This (probably) wouldn't be too tricky but would require everyone to have macros enabled.

Thanks ... to identify if a shared workbook is open, can you only check against the full path ? e.g. J:\temp\myworkbook.xls.
Point being a user could copy the .xls file locally to their C drive, make changes then over write the original on the J drive? Or is there a way to prevent a user from copying the file in the first place ?
