why does excel open some files as csv?

I receive excel reports every day. But the last couple of days when downloading the reports I get them as csv. Also older reports I have saved on the hard disk open as csv. Well, the ones I have saved have are now csv files and I haven't done anything (knowingly) to change them to csv.
    Any suggestions?

If a file is saved as csv it will open as one... If you don't like it, you can save them as something else by selecting the dropdown under the file name in the save dialogue.

Perhaps you have someone you work with who converts old files to csv to save space(?)

I am the only one working on the computer, so no one converts the files to csv without me knowing. I do not save them as csv either.
When I download these files they are compressed and I use winrar to unpack them, but I don't think this should have anything to say. It is only these reports where this happens. The rest of my excel files open as normal.

When you save, double check the "Save As Type" box to make sure it's not going to CSV. It will automatically save as a CSV if it was opened as a CSV or if Excel thinks it was a CSV. Once you make sure it was saved as a workbook, it should stay that way.

yes, but the problem is that when I download them and unzip them with winrar, they open as csv.
Is it possible to open csv files so they are displayed in several columns instead of just one?

    ah, I see...

The problem is that Excel is actually not opening a csv as a csv, if it were, it would already put the cells into the appropriate columns.

I would guess that somebody is saving files in csv format but with .xls extension - adding .xls extension doesn't convert a file from csv...

The simple way is to open the file via data-import from external. Probably quicker, though less "correct" is to use data - text to columns - use comma as delimiter.

Yes this helped. I just don't understand why it started opening the files like this. But thank you for your help.

It has created another problem though, that I did not have before. For instance I have these numbers: ,196.5700,-494.1100
Which are 196.57 and -494.11 but when opening the document as you instructed they are displayed as: 1965700 and -4.941.00.

I think this is to do with local settings re: whether full stops - "." and commas - "," denote decimal points. Check the settings on the advanced options (in step 3, I think) when you import the data.
