Inserting in a protected sheet

I'm using Excel 2007. I have a worksheet in which some of the cells are locked, and the worksheet is protected. I used to be able to insert comments into locked and unlocked cells. Recently, I have not been able to insert comments into a protected sheet. In fact, I notice that I am unable to insert other things, too, such as Picture, SmartArt, Column, Text Box, etc., from the Insert Tab. Does anyone know why the ability to insert things into a protected sheet has changed? Any help is appreciated. Thank you. kc

I just tried something I hadn't before: I tried protecting the sheet again, but this time, I checked the box which allowed the user to edit objects. I was again able to insert comments. How come I've never had to check this box before to be able to insert comments. Thanks.
