    lookup first letter in cell.

Is there a way to lookup the first letter of a word in the cell.
I am trying to keep my sheet as small as possible for emailing. It would help to narrow down the possible lookup combinations.
For example I only need to know if it starts with T, P, or V. I don't need to know the rest of the word. eg TMO, TAEFA, P1284, VTL3D etc....
    thanks

    =LEFT(A1,1)

    where A1 holds string.
