Excel 2007 : Vlookup

I want to match a racer number in column A of sheet one with a racer number in a column in sheet 2, 3, 4 etc and return race points for that racer. I have tried to use the VLOOKUP function without success

Sheet 1

racernumber Name raceApoints raceBpoints raceCpoints

Sheet 2 (raceApoints)

racernumber name position raceApoints

Sheet 3 (raceBpoints)

racernumber name position raceBpoints

[Cheeky Charlie]

=vlookup(<racernumber>, sheet2!A:D,4,0)

If this doesn't work, perhaps post an example to make it more clear. Also, you will get better help if you post in the right forum.
