Two questions:
1) How do make values on x-axis as words? E.g. apples, oranges, etc.
2) Is it possible to have the numbers on x-axis in descending order? If I can figure out 1), I can do this as well, but it would be nice to know if it is possible to have the numbers on x-axis in descending order.

It will depend on the chart type.
If the axis is of category type then you can link the range of cells containing label text via the Source data dialog.
You can reverse the order of the axis via the Scale tab of the Format Axis dialog.
Got the reverse order. How do I move the numbers to the left of the y axis (maximum)?
I have a chart type: "XY (Scatter) with data points connected by lines".
Please see the attached settings that I have for x-axis. I still have numbers showing up on the x-axis.
An xy scatter chart compares numerical values (x versus y) if you want the x axis to be text, try line charts.

substitute commas with semi-colons if your region settings requires

Great, got that.
Also need to change Category (X) axis to Category from Automatic: Chart Options->Axes->Primary Axis-> Category (X) axis->Category.
Still have a question about moving the numbers to the left of the y axis (maximum) when the revers is used.
Are you asking for the maximum space between the axis and the numbers?
No, I would like to move y-axis values to the far left (to the left of '8' in the attached image).
On the X axis format dialog check both
Values in Reverse Order
Value (Y) Axis crosses at Maximum value
