today's date, and how to make a timeline chart

Hi, thanks for reading. I decided I would do a timeline of events in my life. I made a column for the title of the event, one for a start date, an end date, and then a duration column which was just (end date) – (start date) which is outputted in days.

Now, I have two questions. How do I format a cell so that it displays whatever today’s date is, when the spreadsheet is opened? I saw a TODAY command while consulting the help file, but it is not working for me, perhaps, there is a syntax part of it I don’t understand yet.

The second question is about creating a chart with the events. I was working at company x when I got engaged, but by the time my wedding rolled around I was working at company z, so with relation to a fixed date (say, the day I graduated college), I want to show how some of the events in my life overlap. I want a floating bar to be labeled “company x” and the start date 2003-02-15 (for example). The length of the bar being representative of 400 days (the duration of the job) and the other end of the bar displaying the end date (date I quit), underneath it another bar showing “company z” the length being as long as I worked there, but above both of them, a bar labeled ‘christine engagement’ that started, lets say, 2002-05-22 and has a duration longer than company x and company z . So it would look like a long horizontal line (christine engagement) and underneath it a short horizontal line (company x), and on a spot just below those lines a third line (company z). The overall effect being a timeline in graphic form. Maybe I’m approaching it incorrectly, or there is another program (Access?) that would be better to use? I also envision this being very large to print out, like 4 feet long and a couple feet wide. I wonder if that’s a whole other can of worms, because I’ve never attempted a print out like that either… Your help and suggestions are appreciated, thank you.
