Use of IF function

I have two colmns A1..B20
I enter data in Column A and have a running total in column B
I do not want results to be displayed in Column B until I enter data in Column A

In Lotus 123 I would do this as follows @IF(A2=" "," ",B1+A2)

How would I do it in Excel?

I an an Excel Novice and need help.
