I am having difficulty with what initially seemed a simple problem until I exceeded the nested IF limits

Does this work for you ?
G3: =IF($F3=0,0,IF($G2,$G2,LOOKUP(2,1/($G$2:$G2<>0),$G$2:$G2)*-1))
copy down as required
(note for your own regional settings you may need to alter syntax re: use of semi-colon etc...)
