Hi all:
I use Excel 2007 which is creating a whole load of tmp files of the spreadsheet that I work on.
Is there a way tostop Excel from creating and saving the tmp files? Thanks.

Bump no response.
Do you use AVG anti-virus?
Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate
Hi shg:
I use Trend Micro.
- Ravi
AVG seems to cause it to happen; I used to use Trend (and don't recall any problems), but have since switched to Kaspersky.
If you Google excel 2007 tmp files, there are many, many hits from people with similar problems.
try disabling the av program from scanning just the folder where you save to, probably my documents
The OP said he's not using AVG, Martin.
trend micro also has the same issue, advice is to reinstall ,but problem comes back with updates.
looks like some AV apps have a problem with XL2007 on save.

Hi Martin:
Are you saying that Trend Micro should be reinstalled? Thanks.
- Ravi
NO!
but avg and trend micro both seem to scan on save. this results in 2007 being interrupted an keeps a temp version. the best bet at present is to stop scan on save.
As there is no option for file extensions i.e. xlsx you should be able stop either by telling it not to scan on save to any designated folder.
Hi Martin:
I contacted Trend Micro. The solution is simple. In Tred Micro:
1. Click Virus & Spyware Control
2. Click Prevent Unauthorized Changes
3. Click Exceptions List
4. Click Add Program
5. Navigate to wherever Microsoft Office is installed
6. Identify and click on Excel. Exe
7. Under the Response tab, selected Trust from the drop down list.
8. Restart the computer.
I did this and so far have not seen any tmp files created by Excel. Thanks.

You're a star, Ravi, thanks for posting back.
I had the same problem that occured after a recent update to Trend Micro. This is the solution that their tech support came up with. I tried setting exceptions and reinstalling the software until this finally worked. Hope this may help someone and save them the time I wish I could have.

Thank you very much for your response. I understand that the suggested solution did not resolve your issue. Thank you for letting us know and please allow me to continue assisting you in this case.
With regards to your issue, please follow the steps I provided below:
Password: novirus
1. Extract contents of NTDLL folder on Install folder > Internet Security (C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security).
2. Extract contents of NTKD folder on C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
3. Click on Start > Run.
4. Type regedit then press ok (Registry Editor appears).
5. Click on the plus (+) beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
6. Click on the plus (+) beside SYSTEM.
7. Click on the plus (+) beside ControlSet001.
8. Click on the plus (+) beside Services.
9. Click on the plus (+) beside vsapint.
10. Right - Click on the folder Parameters, select New > DWORD registry value.
11. Rename the new DWORD registry value to UseMapping and then set it to 0.
12. Reboot the computer.
Note: For some cases that there is no Parameters folder under vsapint folder follow the steps below:
a. Right - Click on the folder vsapint, select New > Key.
b. Rename the new Key to Parameters.
c. Proceed to step # 10 at the top.
After doing the steps above, you should not get the .tmp files anymore.
Finally a solution that actually works. Thanks for your posting... that is one major annoyance fixed.
Glad that this saved someone some grief!
I am having the same problem with Excel 2003. Does anyone know if the fix is the same? Thanks.

I'm having the same issue with Excel 2003. Would this work for this version as well?
Thanks,
Mike
