    Sorting Issue

I have a question about sorting when using the sort function in Excel 2000. If i make a spreadsheet that uses 10 columns and column A is a unique number, how can I sort this spreadsheet without jumbling columns B thru J. Is there a way to make sure that A3, B3, C3, D3, etc... will stay in the same row? The example below hopefully shows what I am trying to do. If i accidentaly just select column A (Report Number) and do a sort, then all the other data is now not in the correct row. If i then save when I exit, this info is now permanately jumbled. Is there a way to lock the rows together so that they can not get out of order?

    Re: Sorting Issue

Best was is to put FILTER in first row.

Then you can sort (ascending, descending), filter etc etc

    Book1.xls

    Look here with your data...
Only arrange them in one cell abouve (here I was little bit confused about what's in first row and don't merge cells)...

Below you'll get your data... Just click on drop down arrow and play with it

    Re: Sorting Issue

It seems that you are working with a RANGE. This is simply a collection of cells with data in it. Excel doesn't know that the data is connected in any way!

You need to convert this RANGE into a TABLE!

To do this, simply highlight the data you wish to make your table with, and find "Table" in the "Insert" menu. If your box of data's first row contain labels that say what the data is (i.e. "First Name", "ID Number", etc.), you should click the checkbox near "My data table has headers".

Now, the column labels (headers) will include drop-down arrows in their cells when AutoFiltering is on. (Click the "Filter" icon in the "Data" menu or press Ctrl+Shift+L). Now you can choose various ways to SORT and FILTER your data, and the rows that should stay together will do as they should!

    Jason,

I think you're referring to a List (Data > List > Create List), not a Table
