Excel 2007 converts as read only/temp with 2003

My finance department uses Excel constantly. Three of them use 2003 and one uses 2007. Two of the Three using 2003 can open the 2007 files without a problem, the downloaded converter from Microsoft works well. The other one using 2003 doesn't work so well. Any Excel 2007 file that he opens, opens as read only, and the file name changes to Xl000000001. They all run Windows XP Professional SP3.

He can open Word 2007 files fine.

The only difference that I saw was the two had Office 2003 Professional and he had Standard, but I changed his to Professional with the same problem. I have logged on as different users on his computer....same problem.

I haven't been able to find a solution on this exact problem. Any help would be appreciated. I know it can be worked around, but I would like to find a solution.

Hello Musmagic,

I think you have to format excel and then reinstall.

or check the >>Tools>>Options.

I don't know exactly what you mean by 'format' excel. And I'm not sure what I should be looking for in Tools>>Options.

This is still not solved.

In fact, I just got some new computers which I am installing Office 2003. The one I'm working on now has the same problem, I haven't checked the others yet.

I'm sure someone has had this problem before....any solutions?

You may have already found a solution, but I had a similar issue. Here is how I solved it:

Your posting states that Windows was using SP3 but you did not say what service packs your Office installations were using. In my case, the problem was the users who could not edit the files were running either SP2 or SP1. Uninstalling the converter, installing Office SP3, and reinstalling the converter resolved the problem.

I hadn't solved it yet until this bit of information. But I didn't uninstall the converter....I just installed SP3 for Office 2003 and it worked like a charm.
