    Excel '03 ALT keyboard shortcuts slow in '07

    I have been taking advantage of the fact that the old ALT keyboard shortcuts from Excel '03 also work in '07, but have come across a very annoying problem: '07 requires a slight delay between pressing each key, while '03 allowed you to press them very fast.

    Example: to paste values, you press ALT+E+S+V. In '03, I can press the entire key combination in well under a second. However, if I press that combination very quickly in '07, it pops up this little box that says:
    Office 2003 access key: ALT, E,
    Continue typing the Office 2003 menu
    key sequence, or press Escape to cancel.

    However, if I press ALT+E+S+V with a half second delay between each key stroke, it works fine. Strangely, if you use a command with fewer keystrokes (for instance, inserting a cell/row/column, which is ALT+I+E) it works just fine at any speed.

    So, my question is how do I get '07 to allow me to do the more full commands like ALT+E+S+V at full speed?

    @Oldchippy,

    I think you're missing the point that kylesable was trying to make.

    It's not that the shortcut keys don't work. It's that they require you to enter the keyboard shortcut sequence slowly.

    If you already type them in slowly you may not notice, but if you happen to be a fast typer you will be impacted.
    For me, Excel 2007 almost NEVER recognizes keyboard shortcut sequences the first time around. I always have to type them in a second time, or look at the pop-up box and complete the sequence.

    The same also happens when you use the shortcut keys built into Excel 2007.
    For example: Excel 2007 has a shortcut sequence for decreasing decimal places by one: Alt+H+9. If you type in Alt+H+9 into your keyboard, you can watch Excel walk through the steps and there is a noticeable lag before the highlighted cell actually reduces the number of decimals by 1. Now try reducing the number of decimals multiple times in a row - you'll want to kill somebody.
    This doesn't happen in Excel 2003. I can reduce decimal places to my hearts content without any noticeable lag between my actions and Excel responding.

    It looks like Microsoft has used a non-standard Windows method to make the shortcuts work and it doesn't work well at all!

    </rant>

    Sorry for that. I'm still transitioning to Excel 2007, and there are a couple of things that still frustrate me.

    I do love having a million rows and being able to deal with much larger datasets though!

    In '03, I can press the entire key combination in well under a second
    - Really!

    However, (in '07) if I press ALT+E+S+V with a half second delay between each key stroke, it works fine
    - That's me

    Life goes by to fast without trying to break your neck!

    Kynddaze, have you found a solution to the issue you raised? I'm slowly making the transition over to Office 2007 and professionally will have it forced on me within the next 6 months, and based on my limited experience with it so far I'm petrified of my productivity plummeting because of the keystroke delay, which as you say requires you to be very deliberate about typing the shortcuts with a short pause, rather than typing them almost subconsciously and in rapid succession.

    Any and all guidance would be fantastic - I'm surprised to not find more references to the issue in my searches.

    Thanks!
