    Reconciling Two Lists

I have two very long lists of names and other information. I need to figure out which names appear on both lists and doing so by hand would take a really long time. Is there a function I can use or something else I can do to automatically do it? And please answer step by step; I know very little about Excel. Thanks.

use vlookup- attach a sample of your workbook and I'll do it for you if you like

    Re: Reconciling Two Lists

    Hi

if you need to find out which names are on both sheet 1 and the Admitted sheet put the below formula into cell B2, Sheet1 and drag down.
    =VLOOKUP(A:A,'2009 Admitted List'!B:B,1,0)
If you need to check which of the Admitted Sheet are on Sheet 1 you will have to add the surnames to sheet 1. Because there are duplicate surnames on the Admitted sheet the lookup will incorrectly match off each entry based on surname only eg Davidson

    Re: Reconciling Two Lists

Thanks for the help. Yes, I'm trying to identify which entries on the 2009 Admitted List have a last name that appears in the list of last names. Ideally, I could get a True/False or 1/0 entry in a column on the Admitted List sheet. Please let me know if this can be done. Thanks.

Also, the function you provided doesn't seem to work.
