Auto populating columns in one sheet from another based on criteria

Hello All, I've been trying for some time now to figure out how to have one sheet automatically fill in another based on a larger data sheet. I'm trying to find a way to take a monthly calendar which contains a row for each employee and column for each day and use that to create smaller lists on another sheet. Basically if someone puts in for a day off, or has a medical appointment etc, that person has a coded single letter for that day for tracking and planning purposes. I want to have a second sheet that references those codes and makes individual lists (the following people are on vacation, these people have a medical appointment etc.) Any advice on how to do that would be great! I provided an example file. Thanks!

That's pretty close. I've got a few questions though.
-Why when i look at the formula does it show up enclosed in brackets?
-Can I change the date block so that when i change the date it will change the lists? I tried naming the date block as "DutyDay" and then replacing any reference to TODAY() in the formula with "DutyDay" but it did not work.

This formula has brackets coz twas confirmed by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter, e.g this one is array formula.

Try link TODAY() with any cell with TODAY() placed into.

But this formula gives #NUM! errors. To hide 'em I used conditional formatting. Not the best way This formula gets rid of this error.

These codes no longer seem to work now that i'm using excel 2007/Vista. I've attached an updated version of what i'm working with.

The SDO and ODO spaces are filled by the order of the person, so if pilot 5 and pilot 7 are on duty together, 5 is the SDO and 7 is the ODO.
