Referencing a cell instead of a value

Below is the formula I am using. In the first part of the formula where I am looking for values beginning with BCDF I want to be able to reference a cell with the value BCDF typed into it - Like =SUMPRODUCT(--(LEFT(DATA!$C$1:$C$1850,4)="A1") - where A1=BCDF. IS THIS POSSIBLE????

    =SUMPRODUCT(--(LEFT(DATA!$C$1:$C$1850,4)="BCDF"),--(LEFT(DATA!$D$1:$D$1850,4)="CONT"),DATA!$J$1:$J$1850)

You only put quotes around text strings, not cell references.

    =SUMPRODUCT(--(LEFT(DATA!$C$1:$C$1850,4)=A1), --(LEFT(DATA!$D$1:$D$1850,4)=B1), DATA!$J$1:$J$1850)
