working with a hyperlink

I'm having trouble with making a hyperlink in a sheet and need help.

I assigned a hyperlink to a graphic within a sheet. The hyperlink is set to a file (a PNG picture). It should open in my default picture viewer, but instead tries opening in Internet Explorer.

Why can't the link open a file like normal?

Hi Melina,

Are you sure it's not a file association based problem with say windows xp?

Does it only open png files (through IE) when trying to do so from excel via a link, or if you open a png file from windows does it do the same?

Try going into (my computer/tools/folder options/file types) and then checking that the png file is set to open with the program that you want it to open with (windows picture/fax viewer)

The file association in Windows is for the program IrfanView to open a PNG or JPG, and they open correctly in that program when opened directly, but Excel incorrectly opens them in Internet Explorer.

The guru Steve Rindsberg in the PowerPoint group, said it's a design flaw that Microsoft overlooked, and that I'm not alone. It works that way for everyone.

I just changed my file association to picture viewer for *.PNG (just as a test) then created a Hyperlink in excel 2003 to a png image on my desktop and it opened it in picture viewer....

Guess this must be a bug that doesn't affect everyone.
