Can excel do this?

Is it possible to type a number into a cell and any other chosen cells will highlight?
In other words, what I am trying to do is:
type a # (1, 2,3 or 4 ) and depending on which number I input certain data colums will highlight so I know that data needs to be input there. If I type a "1" then columns D, F and G need to have data input.. If I type a "2" then columns D,F and H need data and so on.. hopefully this makes sense.
