Scale of x-axis on column graphs

I'm trying to graph a series of x-y values using a column graph. The x values are feet into a project, and the y values are some data that go with the location. Most of the x values are on 500-ft intervals, but some are left out for a reason. But I want them scaled correctly; e.g., the scale of the x-axis to be in 500-ft intervals even if no data appears at one of them. It does this right using an XY scatter. But when I convert it to a column graph, it doesn't scale right. When I skip a 500-ft interval, there is no gap. I went into the Format Axis option, but there is no option for intervals anymore as there was when it was a scatter graph. Is there a way around this? Or is a column graph strictly for text-based info such as month labels? I have already used the search function. Any help would be appreciated.

cj, you've put your finger on it. For a column graph the x axis is strictly category text, unless you use a date/time axis.

If you have gaps in your data, you'll have to lay out the data with empty cells for that gap, but you have to create all categories that you want to see on the chart.

If you want variable width colulmns you can fake it with area charts.
