    data validation on a cell with total (sum)

    how can I set up data validation on cell (say A1)- which is the result (autosum) of a range of cells(eg. A3-A8). ie... so my total(A1) does not exceed a certain number.?

    Hi tubells,

    Data Validation messages appear only when data is typed directly into the cells. Your warning message won't appear:

    When a user enters data in the cell by copying or filling.
    When a formula in the cell calculates a result that isn't valid.
    When a macro enters invalid data in the cell.

    If you wish to see a warning message from a formula sum, you might try using an IF statement for this purpose:

    thks ConneXionLost. I was afraid that was the case. but your other suggestion is good and I will use it.
