preferences keep defaulting to manual calculation

I am on a Mac running OS 10.4.11. Whenever I launch Excel 2008, I have to go to Preferences and set Calculation to automatic. Then Excel calculates automatically until the next time I launch the program. Then I find it has defaulted back to manual. Any way to fix this?
    Thanks

Re: preferences keep defaulting to manual calculation

    Hi,
I am not 100% sure if this is the same for Excel 2008 in MAC but when i have this problem, i change it in preferences, AND i also have to open up my personal.xls workbook (via alt+f11) and save my personal.xls

Another way to do is go to Window>Unhide>Personal & then press save.

    Hope this helps, thanks

Perhaps you have a default template in your XLSTART forder that has calculation set to manual.

I guess things are a whole lot different on the Mac side compared to you Windows folks, but was inspired by your answers to take a look at my Microsoft Preferences file in my user Library and deleted the Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist. I then restarted Excel with a new document and the calculation was set to automatic. I then relaunched Excel and opened a file from a client and the calculation preference was set to manual. So I suspect that the problem may be in files I get from other people. Anyway, thanks for inspiring me to look into the whole preferences thing further.
