hi,

suppose for simplicity f(x) = 3x+1

i wish to display the contents of cell A4 in cell B1, A7 in Cells B2, A10 in cell B3, and so on.

i.e. in cell Bx, I want to display the contents of cell Af(x).

How do I do this?

In B1, =Index(A:A,Row()*3+1) and drag down.

Type the following in B1 and drag down:

=INDIRECT("A"&ROW()*3+1)

Cutter, you generally want to stay away from Indirect if you can help it just because it's a volatile function. See this link for more on why.
