Increase value by 1 if value in another cell changes

Been racking my brains on this, hope somebody can help, as I have hundreds of changes to do manually otherwise.
A1 has for example 2009 , G1 has a random number in it.

If i change the value in A1 to 2010 for instance, how can i get the value in G1 to automatically increase by 1 ?

Would i have to put the formula/function in a seperate column or could I include it in either of the columns A or G mentioned ?
    Many Thanks

    Hi,

Does the value increase by 1 because that's the difference between 2009 & 2010, or do you want to add 1 whatever the change?

I suppose there are two ways. Take a copy of column A, make your changes and then compare column A with the copy column. Suppose the copy column is say B:B, in another column say C create the formula

Then copy column C and paste special values to column G.

Alternatively you could create a macro which reacted to a sheet change event and automatically update column G within the macro, but that may be overkill.
