    Help with referencing.

    Hi,

I have a long list of Key metrics throughout the business, each with an Unique ID in column A. Some of the metrics are formed using calculations, so as a point of reference - I have created the formula using the Unique ID's.

    Example: "(134512 / 13511) * 12698"

Each of the above numbers refers to a Unique ID in the list.

What I want to be able to do is to create a formula that uses the calculation field, so looking up each of the ID's and bringing back the result of the calculation.

I have attached an example, any ideas are welcome.

    Thanks

    Hi,

in this particular instance, this formula will do the trick (I've deleted the enclosing round brackets from C3!!!)

.... but I'm wondering if there is not a bigger picture that, upon understanding and analysing, may make the whole concept a bit easier.

Why don't you step back a few paces and tell us what this is all about? It looks like some kind of accounting application, where you want to sum certain cells, but you want to be able to determine on a case by case basis which cells/account codes are to be summed?

    Is that about right?

Thanks, However - the calculation may sometimes be much more complicated. So wanted to try and have some way of referencing and using the calculation within the cell, rather than having the calculation looking up and using the references in the cal field. I want to try and get 1 standard formula that will suit all Calculations rather then creating individual formulas.

Basically - the reference table is going to be an inventory of Key metrics captured through out the business, with relating information on source, ownership etc. The calculation field will identify the subset of metrics, and the calculation used to form that value.

All reports created will then reference this document, to pull through certain info such as targets, owner etc based on the ID field. Within the calculation field - I need it to actually use the calculation stated - to then form the result based on the values within the report.

    Hope this makes sense.
