Excel 2007 : File saves as MS Excel worksheet

My xlsx file saves automatically as an MS excel worksheet instead of a workbook. When I try opening it gives a wrong file format and then corrupts.
Can any one help

Check your settings via,
Office button > Excel Options > Save > Save as file format

Can you post an example of what gets saved.
